When my family returned to the Chicagoland area in 1986 we joined a church in Naperville. There I met a wonderful woman who not only became my very dear friend but also my inspiration and today, my cause. Deb was a parish nurse and her profession suited her perfectly. She was one of the most caring and helpful people I have ever known and anyone who’s path crossed hers, surely felt the same. That’s why it was even more difficult to hear when she was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. She wasn’t one of the good ones, she was one of the best ones and there she was, a young 52-year-old, ready to fight to the end with a smile on her face but also having to come to terms with the fact that stage four cancer is most often terminal. In fact less than half of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer at any stage, live 5 years. (source: www.ovariancancer.org)
"Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer" Run/Walk 2014
After watching my dear friend leave us way too early I decided to get involved. Along with a LOT of other “Deb Supporters,” I joined the Illinois Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) in their “Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer” Run/Walk that takes place in Chicago every May. We call our group “Deb’s Butterflies” and we actively seek out pledges for this event, to help fund the research on this scary disease. Please join me and the NOCC and celebrate Deb’s life by helping other great women improve their chances with ovarian cancer. And, please pray for nice weather for the walk on May 2nd !
