JLCR Members

Junior League of Cedar Rapids, Inc. (JLCR) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  The concept of Junior League was formed more than a century ago in New York by a group of concerned young women who wanted to contribute to their community in hopes of making it a better place to live.  Today, the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI)  encompasses more than 294 autonomous Leagues with more than 190,000 members.  Our local organization was founded as a service league in 1929 and officially became Junior League of Cedar Rapids in 1934. Currently, we are a diverse group of more than 300 active and sustaining members.

Apartment in a Suitcase

Our current project is called Bridging the G.A.P. (Guide. Advocate. Provide.)  Of the approximately 545 children in foster care in the Cedar Rapids area, roughly 40% are teens.  Every year, at least 25 of these teens turn 18 and graduate from high school while in the foster care system.  These teens often lack the support and resources that young adults need to live independently.  JLCR fills suitcases which cost around $400 each with necessities such as bedding, pots and pans, and cleaning supplies.  The project also partners JLCR with AMP (Achieving Maximum Potential), a program that empowers young adults by supporting the development of life skills.  In addition, JLCR has started a scholarship fund designed to help those currently within, or having recently aged out of, the foster care system afford items they need assistance financing such as school books, sporting gear for team sports, money for gas or household items.

I have been a member of JLCR since 2012 and have loved getting to make a difference

Cooking for AMP

in our community. Cooking a meal for the AMP kids is a great way to connect with the youth that we’re helping and they are always so grateful. At our recent Christmas themed meal, one of the kids came into the kitchen and thanked us saying his family could never pull off that kind of meal, which was ham, cheesy potatoes, green beans and we decorated sugar cookies for dessert.  I also can’t say enough about our suitcase project. These kids don’t have the family resources to get hand-me-down kitchenware, towels, bedding, cleaning supplies, etc that a lot of us get when we move out on our own. Every year our project committee works really hard to make sure our foster teens have what they need and also get the best value on the items. They think of everything!

JLCR is preparing for our 7th Annual Fostering Strength event on Tuesday, April 30 at 11AM at the DoubleTree Hotel.  We are excited to announce that our keynote speaker will be Steve Pemberton.  Steve’s triumphant life journey, now a major motion picture, is about defying the seemingly insurmountable odds of the path of the unchosen. Steve was orphaned into foster care, then abandoned and betrayed by the very individuals entrusted with his care.  Yet these challenges only fueled his desire to become a man of resilience, determination and vision. Steve went on to find success as a trail-blazing corporate executive, enlightened people leader, visionary youth advocate and acclaimed speaker devoted to inspiring and helping others.  Mark your calendars and join us!  Purchase Tickets Here
